Castles & Heritage

Stories written in stone,
from prehistory to the present day.

Royal Deeside and the surrounding countryside contain an extraordinary concentration of castles, archaeological sites and historic places. Some are grand family homes filled with collections and carefully preserved interiors; others survive as atmospheric ruins, earthworks or stones set into the landscape thousands of years ago.

The area’s story reaches from prehistoric communities and medieval clan strongholds to the Wars of Independence, the Jacobite period and the enduring royal connection established at Balmoral in the nineteenth century.

From Douneside, guests can explore many of these places as an easy half-day visit or combine several into a wider heritage trail. Opening arrangements vary, particularly at seasonal and privately managed sites, so it is always worth checking before travelling.

Close to Douneside, Tomnaverie offers a direct connection with a prehistoric landscape. Further along the Dee, Crathie Kirk reflects the region’s continuing royal story, while places such as Kincardine O’Neil, Lumphanan and Braemar preserve traces of medieval travel, conflict, worship and community life.
