Royal Deeside

Royal Deeside follows the upper reaches of the River Dee through some of Scotland’s most memorable countryside. The region stretches from the wooded glens around Aboyne and Ballater towards Braemar and the high mountains of the Cairngorms.

Its character comes from the meeting of river, forest, farmland and mountain. Historic villages, traditional estates and long-established walking routes sit alongside one of Scotland’s strongest royal connections, centred on Balmoral and nearby Crathie.

Douneside lies near Tarland, making it a peaceful base for exploring the area without needing to stay in the busiest visitor centres. Guests can spend the day visiting castles, villages, nature reserves and mountain landscapes before returning to the house, gardens and estate.

Balmoral Castle

The Scottish home of the Royal Family and the region’s best-known landmark. The estate, grounds and exhibitions are normally open seasonally, so opening dates should be checked before travelling.

Aboyne is one of the closest larger villages to Douneside, with independent shops, cafés, riverside walks and easy access to nearby woodland and estates. Ballater is known for its royal connection and attractive setting beside the River Dee, while Braemar sits deeper in the mountains and is closely associated with Highland traditions and the annual Gathering.
