The MacRobert Trust Gardens at Douneside House, the Trust’s flagship gardens, showcase an exceptional variety of plants and flowers, carefully curated and maintained by the Trust’s expert horticultural team. Spanning 17 acres, the gardens offer a captivating blend of botanical beauty and tranquility, creating an inspiring environment for guests to explore. In recognition of their exceptional quality, the gardens were awarded the prestigious status of Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Partner Garden.

Our Plants

Horticulture fans can revel in a vast range of fascinating plants on show in the gardens, and visit a small arboretum where we are growing a collection of ornamental trees from around the world. The greenhouse meanwhile, which is open to all guests, is home to a magnificent display of plants throughout the summer months.

Our rock-pool gardens, with their beautiful parade of Hosta, Primula, Iris and Rodgersia, are another must-see. The pools used to be Lady MacRobert’s alpine rock gardens, designed by the world-famous Backhouse Nurseries of York in 1911.

Terrace Garden

Whether you’re seeking quiet reflection by the gentle stream or a peaceful lounge on our ‘infinity lawn’ with sweeping views of the Aberdeenshire countryside and the majestic Grampian mountains, the gardens offer a setting of pure relaxation.

As the day draws to a close, there’s no better place to unwind than our front terrace. With the sun setting over the lawns and a warm Scottish evening breeze in the air, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail or a glass of champagne.

We invite you to experience the serenity, elegance, and natural beauty that make our gardens such a cherished part of the Douneside House experience.
